Snail Freshwater – Nerite

Nerite Snails are one of the most popular freshwater aquarium snails. They are outstanding tank cleaners and effective algae eating snails around. They are popular in planted aquariums. Nerite Snail care is easy, a hardy species and able to adaptto a range of water conditions but do prefer tropical conditions.

Please note: avoid the use of copper based treatments if invertebrates/snails are present in the tank. Ensure Nerite snails are not left upside down as they have difficulty turning themselves back upright and may die if left unattended.

Neritesnail’s are slow moving and lack ability to defend themselves other than retracting into their shell. Only keep with peaceful small species of aquarium fish that are not known to nip.

Nerite snails willconsume aquatic plantswhen they are not well-fed or if the leaves of the plants are soft or decaying. However they are a species of choice for heavily planted aquariums and aquascapes due to the minimally destructive behaviour and will usually only eat dead or decaying plant matter.
Consider use of aquatic plants withfirmer leaves such as:

• Anubias
• Amazon swords
• Microsorium

Nerite Snails don’t require any specific lights however they do appreciate area’s of shade which can be created with use of ornaments, live or fake plants.

Nerite snails enjoy some organic waste in the aquarium. Avoid strong and direct water flow.Select an aquarium filter suited for your aquarium size. Some options include sponge filters, hang on filters and canister filters.

Nerite snails enjoy temperatures between 22 – 26 degrees Celsius. Always use a fish tank thermometer to monitor temperature.
